Combien pèse un e-mail ? A priori pas plus qu’une simple conversation autour d’un café le matin. A y regarder de plus près, pour l’acheminer à son destinataire, il faut compter quelques millions de tonnes d’acier et d’électronique s’il passe par le téléphone mobile et des centaines de milliers de kilomètres de fibre optique s’il emprunte les routes souterraines des réseaux haut débit. Comme le raconte le passionnant livre du journaliste Guillaume Pitron, L’Enfer numérique. Voyage au bout d’un like (Les Liens qui libèrent, 2021), la société dématérialisée promise par le numérique commence par beaucoup de matériel physique… et de pollution, objet de son ouvrage. Le numérique constituera bientôt la plus vaste infrastructure matérielle jamais édifiée par l’homme.
